WSAS: how difficulties affect daily life
The Work and Social Adjustment Scale was presented by Mundt and colleagues in 2002 as a simple measure of impairment in functioning. Rather than how severe symptoms are, it asks how much your current difficulties get in the way of living. Each of its five items covers one area: work or study, managing the home, social leisure with others, private leisure on your own, and close relationships including family. This page uses an English translation of the CareOps version, which has not been independently validated in English.
Reading your results
The result screen shows 0–9 as lower interference, 10–20 as noticeable interference and 21–40 as higher interference. This version offers five response values per item (0, 2, 4, 6, 8) rather than every value on the original 0–8 scale. The five areas are shown separately, so look beyond the total to see which area is most affected. Getting by at work while relationships and leisure have fallen away is itself an important signal, and a higher score is a reason to work through the difficulty with someone.
| Score | Result range |
|---|---|
| 0–9 | Lower interference |
| 10–20 | Noticeable interference |
| 21–40 | Higher interference |
A question to reflect on
Choose the area with the most interference. Compare what you did there before the difficulty began with what you do now. Pick one thing you would like to return to, shrink it to half its usual size and try it once this week.
Frequently asked questions
- How many questions are in Daily functioning (WSAS), and how long does it take?
- There are 5 questions, and it usually takes about 1 minute. For each question you choose one of 5 answers, from “Not at all” to “Very severely; almost unable to do it”. There are no right or wrong answers.
- How do I answer the work item if I'm not working?
- Think of what you are currently expected to do, such as study or responsibilities at home. If you have stopped working because of your difficulties, count that as interference.
- How is this different from a symptom check?
- Symptom checks ask how strong your mood or worry is; the WSAS asks how much those difficulties block daily life. The same symptoms can affect people's lives differently, so the two are useful together.
- If my score goes down, am I improving?
- It suggests you are able to do more across the five areas. Noting which area recovers first makes progress easier to see.
- What does my Daily functioning (WSAS) score mean?
- On this Daily functioning (WSAS) check, the result screen reads 0–9 lower interference, 10–20 noticeable interference, 21–40 higher interference. A score is a starting point for reflection and conversation, not a diagnosis.
- Do I need to sign in? Are my answers saved?
- You can see your results right away without signing in. Your answers are used only for scoring and are not stored on our servers.
- Can I bring these results into a counseling session?
- Use the analysis button at the bottom of the result screen to have a short conversation with Maeumi without signing in. After the conversation, you can continue in the app. The web conversation does not transfer automatically to the app.
- Can I share my results with a friend?
- Yes. Use Share at the top right of the result screen to send a friend the check itself, or share your result as a link or story image. A result link carries your scores inside the address only; it does not include your name or account, and nothing is saved on our side.
