Relationship Assessment Scale: reflecting on your relationship
The Relationship Assessment Scale was published by Susan Hendrick in 1988 as a brief measure for close relationships, whether or not a couple is married. You answer with one current partner or spouse in mind. The seven items cover whether your partner meets your needs, overall satisfaction, how the relationship compares with others, regret, whether it meets your expectations, how much you love your partner and how many problems there are. This page uses an English translation of the CareOps version, which has not been independently validated in English.
Reading your results
Higher scores mean greater satisfaction. The result screen shows 7–16 as lower, 17–26 as moderate and 27–35 as higher. The items on regret and problems are reverse-scored, so check whether strong affection was offset by frequent problems, or whether expectations are going unmet. A score reflects one person's view right now; it does not decide the relationship's future. If the same conflicts keep returning or feel hard to resolve alone, it may be time to talk about them.
| Score | Result range |
|---|---|
| 7–16 | Lower |
| 17–26 | Moderate |
| 27–35 | Higher |
A question to reflect on
Write one recent moment you felt grateful to your partner and one you felt hurt. For the hurt moment, add one sentence about what you wished they had done, then rewrite it as something you could say gently.
Frequently asked questions
- How many questions are in Relationship satisfaction (RAS), and how long does it take?
- There are 7 questions, and it usually takes about 2 minutes. For each question you choose one of 5 answers, from “Not at all” to “Very much”. There are no right or wrong answers.
- Can I take it if I'm not in a relationship?
- The questions ask you to think of one current close relationship. If you are not in one, you can skip this check.
- Can my partner and I both take it?
- Answering separately and then talking about where your answers differed can open a useful conversation. Avoid using the scores to decide who is doing better.
- I took it right after an argument and scored low.
- Strong emotions on a given day can move the score. Retake it a few days later with your usual relationship in mind and compare.
- What does my Relationship satisfaction (RAS) score mean?
- On this Relationship satisfaction (RAS) check, the result screen reads 7–16 lower, 17–26 moderate, 27–35 higher. A score is a starting point for reflection and conversation, not a diagnosis.
- Do I need to sign in? Are my answers saved?
- You can see your results right away without signing in. Your answers are used only for scoring and are not stored on our servers.
- Can I bring these results into a counseling session?
- Use the analysis button at the bottom of the result screen to have a short conversation with Maeumi without signing in. After the conversation, you can continue in the app. The web conversation does not transfer automatically to the app.
- Can I share my results with a friend?
- Yes. Use Share at the top right of the result screen to send a friend the check itself, or share your result as a link or story image. A result link carries your scores inside the address only; it does not include your name or account, and nothing is saved on our side.
