Read our full editorial standards →You told ChatGPT about a breakup, a panic attack or a problem at work, and now you are wondering where that went. Will it bring it up next time? Can you take it back? Here is how memory works in plain language, and what to check before you share something personal with any AI.
At a glance
- ChatGPT has two separate memory settings: saved memories, and the option to reference past chat history. Either can carry personal details into later chats.
- Deleting a chat does not delete a saved memory created from it. To remove something fully, delete the memory and the chat.
- For a one-off personal conversation, Temporary Chat does not create or use memories. Settings change over time, so check OpenAI’s current help page.
Does ChatGPT remember what I tell it?
It can. According to OpenAI’s help center, ChatGPT can carry information forward in two ways, and they are controlled separately in Settings → Personalization.
| Setting | What it keeps | How to remove it |
|---|---|---|
| Saved memories | Specific details ChatGPT decides, or you ask it, to remember | Delete the memory in Manage memories, and the chat it came from |
| Reference chat history | Context drawn from your past conversations, which can shift over time | Turn the setting off; OpenAI says learned details are deleted within 30 days |
| Temporary Chat | Nothing is added to memory, and it does not appear in your history | OpenAI may keep a copy for up to 30 days for safety |
Two details surprise people. First, saved memories are stored separately from the chat where they came from, so deleting the conversation leaves the memory in place. Second, turning memory off stops new memories but does not erase the ones already saved. You have to clear them.
Why this matters for personal conversations
Memory is useful when you want continuity: you do not have to re-explain who your manager is or what you are working on. For emotional topics, it cuts both ways. A detail you shared on a bad night might come back in an unrelated chat, or on a shared screen. On the other hand, if you want an AI to remember your story so you can keep working on it, memory is exactly what you want, as long as you know where it lives.
- Use Temporary Chat when you want to talk something through once and leave no memory behind.
- Review Manage memories every so often and delete anything you would not want resurfacing.
- Avoid identifying details such as full names, addresses and phone numbers. The conversation usually works just as well without them.
- Check data controls for whether your chats may be used to improve models, and change it if you prefer.
What to check in any AI app before you share something personal
The same questions apply to every AI chat or counseling app. You should be able to find the answers in the app’s settings or privacy policy within a few minutes.
- What is stored, and for how long? Conversations, summaries, mood logs or all of the above.
- What is sent to the AI model? Is identifying information removed or masked first?
- Can you delete it yourself? And does deleting your account delete what the app created?
- Is it used for training or shared? Look for a plain answer, not just a link.
- Is the memory working for you? An app that remembers should use it to continue your work, not just to sound familiar.
Our privacy checklist for personal reflections goes through these in more detail.
How CareOps Maeumi handles memory
CareOps Maeumi is an AI counseling app, and remembering is part of the point: each session picks up where the last one left off, so you can follow one concern across weeks instead of starting from zero. Names and phone numbers are masked before text is sent to the AI model, and our privacy policy explains what is stored, shared and deleted. Deleting your account removes the data you created in the app.
If you have been working through something in ChatGPT, you do not have to give it access to anything. Ask it for a short summary, read it, remove what you do not want to share, and paste it into your first Maeumi session. Your first session is free.
Frequently asked questions
- If I delete a ChatGPT conversation, is it forgotten?
- Not necessarily. According to OpenAI’s help center, a saved memory created from a chat stays after the chat is deleted. Delete the memory in Manage memories as well as the chat.
- Does Temporary Chat use or create memories?
- No. Temporary chats do not appear in your history and do not create or use memories. OpenAI says it may keep a copy for up to 30 days for safety purposes.
- Can I turn ChatGPT memory off completely?
- Yes. Saved memories and reference chat history are separate settings under Personalization. Turning them off stops new memories; you still need to delete memories that were already saved.
- Is there an AI counseling app that remembers on purpose?
- CareOps Maeumi remembers earlier sessions so you can continue the same concern, masks names and phone numbers before text reaches the AI model, and lets you delete your account and the data you created. The first session is free.
