When a worry comes up, many people open whichever of ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude they already use. All three listen and summarize well. For talking through a worry, though, what matters more than which is smarter is whether it remembers, whether you can save the way you want it to talk, and what you can do with chats you'd rather not keep. Here they are side by side, using only what each company's help pages say.

At a glance

  • All three can remember past chats, and all three let you turn that off. Each also has a chat that isn't kept in memory (temporary chats in ChatGPT and Gemini, incognito chats in Claude).
  • Each saves your preferred style in a different place: custom instructions in ChatGPT, Gems in Gemini (moving to skills on personal accounts from November 2026), and project instructions in Claude.
  • If you want to work on the same worry over time, an app built around continuing sessions fits better. CareOps Maeumi is an AI counseling app that remembers past sessions and uses established approaches such as CBT and ACT.

What should you compare when choosing an AI for your worries?

When you talk through a worry, the flow of the conversation matters more than the accuracy of any single answer. So we compare five things: memory, saving a preferred style, chats you'd rather not keep, what each company has published about hard conversations, and age limits. We checked each company's official help pages on November 7, 2026; menu names change, so check the current screens too.

Do ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude remember past chats?

AIMemory of past chatsChats not kept in memory
ChatGPTTwo settings, saved memories and reference chat history, each can be turned offTemporary chat: doesn't create or use memories
GeminiPersonalization from past chats (personal accounts), can be turned offTemporary chat: not used for memory, kept for 72 hours
ClaudeMemory (on by default, including free); chat search on paid plansIncognito chat: not saved to history or memory

In ChatGPT, deleting a chat leaves any saved memory created from it; to remove something fully, delete both. Gemini's past-chat personalization isn't available if you're under 18, on a work or school account, or in the European Economic Area, Switzerland or the UK. In Claude, you can also turn memory off for a single chat before you send the first message.

Where do you save the way you want it to talk?

Retyping “listen first, ask one question at a time” for every worry gets tiring. All three let you save instructions like that once.

How do they handle hard conversations?

All three companies publish how they handle conversations with people who are struggling. OpenAI says ChatGPT is trained to direct people who express suicidal intent toward professional help, and it has launched parental controls that link a parent account to a teen account (13 and up). Google's Gemini app policy guidelines say Gemini should not produce output that encourages dangerous acts, including guidance on suicide or self-harm. In a December 2025 post, Anthropic described safeguards that point people to support in conversations about suicide or self-harm, and its work to reduce sycophancy — telling people what they want to hear.

Whatever AI you use, if the replies always seem to take your side, you can change how you ask. We collected examples in questions to ask an AI that always agrees.

Are there age limits?

Anthropic requires Claude.ai users to be 18 or older. Gemini's past-chat personalization isn't available to users under 18. OpenAI offers parental controls that link to teen accounts aged 13 and up. Age rules can differ by country and account, so check the terms when you sign up.

So which one is best for your worries?

On features alone, the three are more alike than you might think. Using the one you already know, set up for your situation as below, usually makes the bigger difference.

  • To pick up where you left off: keep memory on and check what it has remembered now and then.
  • For things you'd rather not keep: start a temporary or incognito chat.
  • To stop retyping your style: save “listen first, one question at a time, advice only when asked” in custom instructions, a Gem or project instructions.
  • With any AI: leave out names, contact details and medical documents, and don't treat a label the AI suggests as a conclusion.

We compare general AI with apps built for counseling in when ChatGPT or Gemini is enough, and when a counseling app fits.

To work on the same worry over time: CareOps Maeumi

A general AI is often enough to get something off your chest and sort it out. If the same worry has been coming back for weeks, an app where sessions continue without managing instructions yourself fits better. CareOps Maeumi is an AI counseling app built around continuing sessions.

  • Sessions continue: you start with a self-check and a first session, and each session builds on what you discussed and decided last time.
  • Established approaches: it suggests a method that fits you, such as CBT, ACT, behavioral activation (BA) or motivational interviewing (MI), with thought records and small action steps done together.
  • Recaps you can keep: each session ends with a summary of what you covered and what to pick up next.
  • Your privacy is protected: personal details such as names and phone numbers are masked before anything reaches the AI.

Signing up, the intake questions and the first self-check are free. You can start by telling Maeumi, in your own words, the worry you have been discussing with another AI. Get the app

Frequently asked questions

Which is best for a worry: ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude?
All three offer memory, chats that aren't kept and a place to save instructions, so they're similar on features. Saving “listen first, one question at a time” in the one you already use makes the bigger difference. To work on the same worry over time, a counseling app with continuing sessions fits better.
Does ChatGPT remember what I told it?
It can. ChatGPT has two settings, saved memories and reference chat history, and each can be turned off. Deleting a chat leaves saved memories, so delete both. Temporary chats don't create or use memories.
Can I talk to an AI without the chat being kept?
Yes. ChatGPT and Gemini have temporary chats, and Claude has incognito chats. Gemini's temporary chats aren't used for personalization but are kept with your account for 72 hours.
Can I use a general AI and a counseling app together?
Yes. You can sort out passing worries with a general AI and keep the one you want to work on in a counseling app with continuing sessions. With CareOps Maeumi, signing up, the intake questions and the first self-check are free.
