Online counseling is convenient because you can start from home, but prices vary by counselor and format, so it's hard to know what to expect. Based on what each service listed publicly on November 7, 2026, here are prices by format and ways to start for free. For counseling costs in general, including in-person sessions, see [our counseling cost guide](/blog/counseling-cost).

At a glance

  • Online sessions with a human counselor (chat or phone) cost about 40,000–80,000 won each on Trost and Mindcafe's public lists, and prices vary by counselor.
  • With the AI counseling app CareOps Maeumi, sign-up, the intake, initial check-ins and the first session are free; see the app for local pricing.
  • If you want a human counselor without the cost, look at free public services; if you want to talk often and keep going, consider AI counseling too.

How much does online counseling cost?

Online counseling comes in two kinds: booked chat, phone or video sessions with a human counselor, and AI counseling you can start at any time. They are different kinds of services, so their prices differ quite a bit.

ServiceFormatListed price (Nov 7, 2026)
TrostText sessions and phone (human counselor)40,000–80,000 won across 10 counselors
MindcafeSessions with a professional (human counselor)“Lowest price” 43,000–73,950 won across 15 professionals
CareOps MaeumiAI counseling (chat and voice)First session free; see the app for pricing

Trost lists separate text and phone prices for each counselor, and some also list in-person prices (85,000 and 120,000 won). Mindcafe's list shows a “lowest price” for each professional but doesn't say which format (chat, phone or video) it covers, so check the format-by-format price on the counselor's page. On both, the price changes with the counselor.

How different are the costs of human and AI online counseling?

CareOps Maeumi, which we built, costs far less per session than the lowest human-counselor price above (40,000 won); see the app for pricing in your country. Still, AI counseling and a human counselor's sessions are different kinds of services, so price alone isn't the deciding factor. It's easier to choose once you decide whether you need time with a person, or want to talk often and keep working on the same worry.

  • Online sessions with a human counselor: you choose a counselor, book a time and pay tens of thousands of won per session. A good fit when you want to talk with a person.
  • AI counseling (CareOps Maeumi): start right away with no booking. An intake looks at what you're dealing with, then sessions continue with established methods such as CBT and ACT, remembering what you talked about last time.

Can I get online counseling for free?

Yes, there are a few options. Places that offer free counseling, such as community mental health centers and university counseling centers, are collected in where to get free counseling. If things feel very hard right now, contact your local crisis line.

If you'd like to try AI counseling first, CareOps Maeumi's sign-up, intake questionnaire, initial check-ins and first session are free. See how the first session goes in the first-session walkthrough.

How do I choose an online counseling service?

  1. Check format and price together. The same counselor may charge differently for chat, phone, video or in person. Make sure the lowest listed price is for the format you want.
  2. Estimate how many sessions you'll need. Counseling usually takes more than one session. Multiply the per-session price by the number you expect to get a monthly cost.
  3. Look at the counselor's credentials and experience. Check their qualifications and the issues they usually work with on their profile.
  4. Read the refund and privacy policies. Check the rules for changing or cancelling a booking, and how conversation records are stored.

What should I look for in online counseling reviews?

In reviews, the content matters more than the star rating. Reviews with specifics like the ones below tell you more about whether a service fits you than simply “good” or “bad.”

  • Whether the reviewer had a concern similar to yours
  • Whether the counselor listened well and sessions connected from one to the next
  • How quickly bookings and replies happened, and whether the price matched what was listed
  • Whether there was a summary or something to try after each session

Chat or phone sessions with a human counselor cost about 40,000–80,000 won each on Trost and Mindcafe's public lists as of November 7, 2026. With the AI counseling app CareOps Maeumi the first session is free; see the app for pricing in your country.

Public and institutional services such as community mental health centers and university counseling centers are free. If you want to start with AI counseling, CareOps Maeumi's sign-up, intake, initial check-ins and first session are free.
Why is AI counseling cheaper than seeing a human counselor?

What should I check when choosing an online counseling service?
Look at the price for each format (chat, phone, video), the monthly cost for the number of sessions you expect, the counselor's credentials, and the refund and privacy policies. In reviews, look for specific stories about similar concerns rather than star ratings.
