Read our full editorial standards →Many people now open ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude first when something is weighing on them. For getting one thing off your chest, that is often enough. But what else helps when the same worry keeps coming back? Here is an item-by-item look at general-purpose AI and apps built for counseling conversations.
At a glance
- ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude are general-purpose assistants; an AI counseling app is built around the flow of counseling: a first session, ongoing sessions, practice, and review.
- For a one-off worry, a general assistant is often enough. If the same concern keeps returning or you want to work on it steadily, an app with continuing sessions fits better.
- CareOps Maeumi starts with questionnaires and a first session, draws on approaches such as CBT and ACT, and connects earlier conversations with practical exercises.
If you want to begin with a general-purpose AI, try the conversation prompt builder. If a reply agrees too readily, see questions that separate empathy from evidence. Which AI fits your concern? Start with the help you need
There is no single AI that fits every personal concern. Choose according to the kind of help you want now.
| What you need now | An option to consider | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Talk through something that happened today | A general assistant such as ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude | It is easy to open and can help organize your thoughts |
| Return to the same concern over several weeks | An AI counseling app such as CareOps Maeumi | Sessions connect earlier conversations with structured practice |
| Get human feedback alongside AI conversations | A qualified counselor or a service that includes human support | A person can discuss the direction of care and next steps |
| Ask about a diagnosis or medication | A qualified healthcare professional | Diagnosis and prescribing belong in clinical care |
For choosing between counseling apps, see how to select a mental health app. For starting in a browser, see the AI counseling website and app guide. Below, we compare general assistants with counseling apps in more detail. If it is hard to decide which worry to start with, the stress self-check lets you look at how you have been lately, without signing in.
Can ChatGPT do counseling for personal worries?
When you tell ChatGPT about a worry, it can listen, help you sort out your thoughts, and give you information about counseling. For talking something through once, that is often enough. ChatGPT can also use custom instructions and memory to keep preferences or refer to earlier context. Compare the actual workflow and settings for sessions, exercises, review and recordkeeping.
Naming a diagnosis or deciding on medication is done in clinical care with a licensed clinician, not in a counseling conversation. It is safer not to treat a diagnosis or risk level an AI mentions as a settled judgment. For ways to talk to ChatGPT in a counseling style, see seven prompts for talking to ChatGPT about a worry. Many people already talk to AI about what is on their mind.
How many people talk to AI about their worries?
The Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs surveyed 1,019 people aged 15 to 79 who had used generative AI in the past month (August to September 2026). 68.8% also used it for emotional purposes such as everyday conversation, comfort, or counseling. 79.9% said an AI answer or suggestion had helped them, and 54.9% said a conversation had made their situation clearer.
The picture is similar in the United States. In a survey of adults with an ongoing mental health condition who had used an AI chatbot in the past year, 48.7% had used it for psychological support. Talking to AI about what is on your mind is already common.
General-purpose AI and AI counseling apps: what is different?
The difference comes from what each was built for. A general assistant is made to help with anything from writing to search to code; a counseling app is built around the order in which counseling unfolds. The right-hand column below describes CareOps Maeumi.
| What to compare | General-purpose AI (ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude) | AI counseling app (CareOps Maeumi) |
|---|---|---|
| Getting started | You write a prompt to begin | Begins with questionnaires and a first session |
| Flow of the conversation | Answers each message as it comes | Sessions shaped as listening, sorting things out together, practice, and review |
| Continuing | How memory or earlier chats are used depends on the service and settings | Remembers earlier sessions and the direction you agreed on |
| Counseling approaches | Explains and gives examples when asked | Draws on approaches such as CBT, ACT, and motivational interviewing within sessions |
| Practice and notes | Can request summaries or exercises in the chat; choose what to keep and revisit | Thought records and behavioral experiments happen in the conversation and are saved |
| Help from a person | You look for a counselor separately | English conversations are with Maeumi, the AI counselor. You can choose notes to discuss with your own counselor. |
What to check when you return to the same concern
A claim to remember previous conversations does not show whether continuity will suit you. Using a fictional meeting concern, check these three things in the actual product.
| What to check | An example |
|---|---|
| Previous context | Is the concern you described, such as self-criticism after speaking in a meeting, summarized accurately? |
| What changed today | Can you describe a new event and correct a previous understanding that no longer fits? |
| What remains afterward | Can you review what you established together and where to begin next time? If you chose an action, can you reflect on trying it? |

When a general assistant is enough
- When you want to talk through something that happened today and sort out your thoughts once
- When you need information, such as what CBT is or what counseling typically costs
- When you want to polish a message or rehearse what to say
Sentences that work well for this are collected in seven prompts for talking to ChatGPT about a worry.
When a counseling app fits better
- When the same worry has been coming back for weeks and you explain it from the beginning each time
- When you want to go beyond comfort and look at how your thoughts, feelings, and actions connect
- When you want to try what you decided in daily life and look back on it in the next conversation
- When you want feedback from a human counselor in addition to conversations with AI
What has research found about AI built for counseling?
A 2023 meta-analysis pooling 15 randomized controlled trials of AI-based conversational agents found meaningful reductions in symptoms of depression and psychological distress. Effects were larger for agents that used generative AI and were delivered in mobile apps, and there was no clear difference in overall well-being.
In 2025, Dartmouth College researchers published a randomized trial assigning 210 adults to Therabot, a generative AI chatbot fine-tuned by experts (106 participants), or a waitlist (104 participants). The intervention lasted four weeks, with assessments at four and eight weeks. In the university’s eight-week results, the Therabot group’s depression symptoms fell by an average of 51% and generalized anxiety symptoms by 31% from baseline. These percentages describe changes within the Therabot group, rather than differences from the waitlist.
Both studies looked at programs designed around the structure of counseling rather than general chatbots. That is why, when choosing an AI counseling app, it helps to check which approaches it draws on and how its conversations are structured. See how to choose a counseling app for more.
How does CareOps Maeumi work?
CareOps Maeumi is an AI counseling app that starts with questionnaires and a first session. Its conversations are informed by established approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), behavioral activation (BA), and motivational interviewing (MI). It suggests a way of working that fits you and keeps to the same direction from session to session.
- It remembers what you talked about and agreed on last time and picks it up in the next session.
- Exercises such as thought records, behavioral experiments, and values work happen step by step inside the conversation.
- At the end of a session it summarizes what you covered and what to continue next time.
- Keep notes about what you tried between sessions and return to those experiences in the next conversation.

You can preview how a first session unfolds. Diagnosis and medication are decided with a licensed clinician, and you can use Maeumi alongside therapy or medical care.
Three things to keep in mind with any AI
In October 2026, Korea's Ministry of Health and Welfare and the Korean Neuropsychiatric Association released guidelines on using generative AI for mental health purposes. They center on three points.
- Check before you start: look at what the service was built for and on what basis, and how it handles personal data. Leave out your name, contact details, address, and documents such as medical certificates or prescriptions.
- Treat what AI says as input rather than a conclusion: if an AI names a condition or a level of risk, hold it loosely instead of as a settled medical judgment, and confirm important information with official sources or a professional.
- Talk to people too: discuss major decisions with someone you trust or a professional. If your time with AI grows while conversations with family and friends shrink, step back on purpose.
If things feel urgent
If you are worried about your immediate safety, contact your local emergency number or a crisis line in your country. In Korea, call 109 (suicide prevention) or 1577-0199 (mental health crisis line); both are open 24 hours.
In CareOps Maeumi, a free self-check result can lead straight into a conversation. For example, take the PSS-10 stress check or the PHQ-9 depression check, then read the result together with Maeumi.
Frequently asked questions
- Which AI should I choose for a personal concern?
- A general assistant such as ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude can help you talk through a concern once. If you want to return to it over time, consider an AI counseling app that connects sessions with structured practice. CareOps Maeumi begins with questionnaires and a first session, then carries the conversation forward.
