Have you told an AI about a worry and received generic comfort or a long list of advice? General-purpose assistants respond very differently depending on how you ask. These seven sentences follow the order counseling takes: listening first, then sorting things out, then one small action.

At a glance

  • Set the role and pace in your first message: "Before giving advice, reflect back what I said and ask one question at a time."
  • Asking for the situation, thoughts, feelings, and actions to be separated lets you sort a worry the way cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) does.
  • Leave out personal details such as your name, contact information, or medical documents, and hold any condition an AI names loosely rather than as a settled judgment.
  • If you would rather continue across sessions without writing prompts each time, an AI counseling app such as CareOps Maeumi is an option.

How do I start my first prompt about a worry?

Put one recent event, the help you want and the pace of questions in your first message. Choose what you need now: listening, separating facts from thoughts, exploring another possibility or choosing one small action. Replace the brackets below with your own words. If you are not sure where to start, the stress self-check lets you look at how you have been lately, without signing in.

“I want to talk about [one recent event] and [how I felt]. Today I want [listening first / separating facts from thoughts / exploring another possibility / choosing one small action]. Briefly reflect what I say and ask one question at a time. Do not guess details I have not given or what someone else is thinking. Let me correct your summary if it is off. I will decide when to finish the conversation.”

If choosing the words is difficult, use the free counseling prompt builder to select a topic and the help you want. You can leave the optional story blank. The tool does not send the prompt to an AI: check it for names and contact details, then paste it into a service you choose. A prompt expresses your preferences; an AI may still misunderstand or answer inaccurately, and you can correct it or stop.

Why do prompts matter when you talk to ChatGPT about a worry?

ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude are general-purpose assistants built to help with anything. If you describe a worry with no instructions, they often go straight to a list of solutions. Counseling takes a different order: listen fully first, sort things out together, and only then settle on one small action. A prompt is how you tell the AI to follow that order.

Seven prompts you can use as they are

  1. Listen first: "I'm going to tell you about something that's bothering me. Give advice only when I ask for it. First reflect back what I said, then ask one question at a time."
  2. Narrow to one event: "Of the things that have been hard lately, I want to look closely at the most recent one. Ask me in turn when it was, where I was, and what happened."
  3. Separate thoughts, feelings, and actions: "Sort what I just described into the situation, the thoughts I had, the feelings, and what I did. If I say something is off, correct it."
  4. Look for another view: "Ask me questions so I can find for myself the evidence that supports that thought and the evidence that doesn't. Please leave the answers to me."
  5. See both sides: "Part of me wants to change and part of me wants to stay the same. Without pushing me either way, help me put each side into words."
  6. Choose a small action: "I want to pick the smallest thing I could try this week. Ask me specifically when, where, and for how long."
  7. Carry it forward: "Summarize today's conversation in five lines: what we looked at, what I noticed, what I decided to try, and what to talk about next. I'll paste this summary next time to continue."

Prompts 3 and 4 follow the thought record used in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), prompt 5 follows motivational interviewing, and prompt 6 follows behavioral activation. To learn more, read our guide to CBT.

An example of turning a prompt into a conversation

This fictional example concerns feeling upset after staying quiet in a meeting. It is not a customer conversation or a promise about an AI response. Choose one request you need rather than using all seven prompts.

StepA message you could adaptWhat to check in the reply
Listen firstI keep thinking about a meeting where I stayed quiet. Before advice, ask one question at a time about what upset me.Does the AI avoid assuming reasons or other people’s intentions?
Separate facts and interpretationsSeparate what I said happened from my guesses. “Everyone must think I am incapable” is my interpretation, not an established fact. Can you correct the summary when it does not fit?
Leave a starting point for next timeWrite one line each on what we established, what is still unclear and what to explore next. I do not want to choose an action yet.You do not need to force a positive conclusion or an action commitment.

If a reply misses the point, explain which part is wrong and what you want to explore first. See how to ask an AI to listen before offering advice for more examples.

Can I use the same prompts in Claude or Gemini?

Yes. You can paste the seven sentences into ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini. They do not depend on any one service's features; they tell the AI the order to follow: listen first, ask one question at a time, then reflect back what you said.

Even with the same sentence, the length and tone of the answers can differ between services. If answers run long, add "Answer in two sentences or fewer." If advice comes first, add "Give advice only when I ask for it." To reuse the same instructions, check features such as ChatGPT custom instructions, Claude project instructions and Gemini Gems. For first lines tailored to relationships, work or family, see worry prompts by situation. Relationship worries get their own situation-by-situation lines in AI relationship advice prompts.

  1. Paste prompt 1 into the first message of a new conversation to set the role and the pace.
  2. After you have talked it through, use prompt 3 to separate the situation, thoughts, feelings, and actions.
  3. Before you finish, use prompt 7 to get a five-line summary of the conversation and keep it.
  4. In the next conversation, paste that summary as your first message and continue from there.

Whether a new conversation remembers what you said before depends on the service and its settings. Pasting the summary yourself is more reliable than counting on memory. Before you type, check the service's data settings for whether conversations are stored or used for training, and leave out personal details such as your name and contact information.

Three things to keep in mind when you talk to AI about your feelings

In October 2026, Korea's Ministry of Health and Welfare and the Korean Neuropsychiatric Association released guidelines on using generative AI for mental health purposes. Applied to writing prompts, the three key messages look like this.

  1. Decide before you start: leave out your name, contact details, address, medical certificates, prescriptions, and test results. Refer to other people as "a friend" or "my manager," and decide in advance how far today's conversation will go.
  2. Treat what AI says as input rather than a conclusion: if an AI says "this sounds like depression," hold it loosely instead of as a settled judgment. Confirm important information with official sources or a professional.
  3. Talk to people too: discuss big decisions such as quitting a job or ending a relationship with someone you trust. If conversations with AI get longer while conversations with people around you shrink, step back for a while.

If you would rather not write a prompt every time

Depending on the service and settings, a general assistant can also use saved instructions or memory across conversations. If you want to choose what to carry forward, keep a short summary and revisit what happened when you tried an agreed action.

CareOps Maeumi brings this structure into an AI counseling app. Begin with questionnaires and a first session, then explore approaches such as CBT, ACT, and motivational interviewing. Maeumi remembers earlier sessions and agreed next steps. Exercises such as thought records appear as cards inside the conversation.

If things feel urgent

If you are worried about your immediate safety, contact your local emergency number or a crisis line in your country. In Korea, call 109 (suicide prevention) or 1577-0199 (mental health crisis line); both are open 24 hours.

What to bring to a first conversation with Maeumi

You do not need to transfer a whole conversation. Write one line in your own words about the event, how it felt and the help you want today. For example: “I keep replaying a meeting where I stayed quiet. I want help making sense of that moment first.” Conversations are not automatically transferred between services.

To reflect on recent mood and daily experiences, you can explore a free self-check without signing in — PHQ-9 mood, GAD-7 anxiety, PSS-10 stress or self-esteem. In a conversation, start with an everyday moment and the parts you choose to discuss.

Frequently asked questions

How do I write a prompt for talking to ChatGPT about a worry?
In your first message, describe one recent event, the help you want (listening, sorting things out, another perspective or a small action) and the pace (one question at a time). Ask to be able to correct the AI’s assumptions, and leave out names and contact details. You can also choose a topic and conversation style in the free prompt builder, review the text and paste it yourself.
Can I use the same prompts in Claude or Gemini?
Yes. The seven sentences do not depend on any one service's features; they tell the AI the order to follow, so they work in ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini alike. If answers run long or advice comes first, add "Answer in two sentences or fewer" or "Give advice only when I ask for it."
Can I use Claude for counseling-style conversations?
It can help you sort out your thoughts and find information about counseling. Naming a diagnosis or deciding on medication is done in clinical care, so it is safer not to treat what an AI says as a conclusion. Use the prompts in this article to set the order of the conversation. If you want to keep working on the same concern, you need a structure that carries earlier conversations forward.
How do I continue a Claude or Gemini conversation next time?
Whether a new conversation remembers earlier ones depends on the service and its settings. Before you finish, use prompt 7 to get a five-line summary, and paste it as the first message of your next conversation.
Is there anything I should leave out when I talk to AI about a worry?
It is best to leave out personal details such as your name, contact information, and address, and documents such as medical certificates, prescriptions, or test results. Refer to other people as "a friend" or "my manager" instead of by name.
Is there a way to continue like counseling without writing prompts?
Use an app built for counseling conversations. CareOps Maeumi has a set flow from the first session to the end-of-session summary, and it remembers earlier sessions so you can continue.
